Award winner author, Ian McEwan was born on 21 June 1948 in Aldershot, England. He studied at the University of Sussex, where he received a BA degree in English Literature in 1970. He received his MA degree in English Literature at the University of East Anglia.

Sweet Tooth is about spying and reading. Beautiful spy, Serena Frome is young, naive and an indiscriminate reader.  She believes "Valley of the Dolls" to be as good as anything by Jane Austin and prefers "Marry me"  novels overall. She is a hopeless romantic and indiscriminate lover, falling in love with any man who expresses an interest. 

Serena makes the most unlikely spy. After an affair with Tony Canning, a middle-aged, married history tutor and British spy, she gets a low level position in British intelligence. Her first assignment, Sweet Tooth, she is to find and fund a pro capitalist novelist. She finds writer Tom Haley and quickly falls into bed and love. Serena is faced with a dilemma, does she reveal herself to Tom before he discovers her true identity? 

The Spy Who Liked it Hot, Michiko Kakutani's review of Sweet Tooth for The New York Times compares Tom to a young McEwan, "..., in the role of Serena’s lover, a writer who bears more than passing resemblance to the younger Mr. McEwan himself."
