“"I would not have chosen this catastrophe. But since it happened, I want to explore it. I feel I was thrown into no man's land and the only way to allow my life to coexist with death is to write about it."
--David Grossman from interview with Harriet Sherwood, The Guardian, Sunday, May 29, 2011

is reading To The End of the Land by David Grossman for April 23, 2013.

To the End of the Land by David Grossman is an intimate and compelling story about Ora, a mother who sees her son, Ofer leave to fight in an Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She believes in her heart she will never see him again – that he will die. In her despair, she flees her home to avoid receiving the message of his death. If she doesn’t know, he is safe.  He is alive.

The story is complex. There is a love triangle, two friends, Ilan and Avram love the same woman and she loves them both. There are two children, one fathered by Ilan and the other by Avram. Both boys, Adam and Ofer are raised by Ilan. Avram, Ofer’s father has had no contact with his son.

Her trip, intended originally as a respite with her son becomes a way to escape reality, no phone, no news, and no contact. Ora convinces Avram to accompany her to the end of Israel in the Galilee hills. Most of the novel surrounds the conversations between Ora and Avram about Ofer’s life. “I am afraid to forget him. His childhood, I mean. I often get confused between the two boys. Before they were born I thought a mother remembers every child separately. Well that’s not exactly how it is.” She begins a notebook to write down the few things she remembers about Ofer – to finally write something down that is permanent. This is a mother's journey to honor her son.
