Author Bio:

Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park , IL, a suburb of Chicago. His parents were Clarence and Grace Hemingway with whom he had a tenuous relationship. He completed high school in 1917 and headed to Kansas City to work for the Kansas City Star newspaper as a reporter.
.
He married four times. His first wife was Hadley Richardson, followed by her best friend Pauline Pfeiffer, then fellow reporter Martha Gellhorn than Mary Welch.

He spent his earlier writing career in Paris among some literary giants such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ford Madox Ford, Ezra Pound and James Joyce. His first novel, The Sun Also Rises (1926) was well received. His second novel, A Farewell to Arms is considered by many to be his best. He completed his last book in 1952, The Old Man and the Sea, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. In 1954 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Hemingway suffered from depression throughout his life and after having to leave his beloved home in Cuba, he returned to the United States, where he shot himself to death in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961. He was 60 years old.

is reading "To Have and To Have Not" written by Ernest Hemingway for August book club.

We held book club in sunny Key West during the Hemingway Days festival. We attended literary talks, watched old and new Hemingway films, met the Papas at Sloppy Joe's, ran with the Bulls, and drank mojitos under the setting sun. It was fun to take in all the sights and sounds of some of Papa Hemingway's favorite places. See you next year!

Professor Wai Chee Dimock introduces Hemingway's novel To Have and Have Not, which originally appeared as a series of short stories in Cosmopolitan and Esquire magazines. She focuses on Hemingway's designation of taxanomic groups ("types") by race, class, and sexuality, arguing that Hemingway's switch of narrative perspectives throughout the course of the novel casts every character, even protagonist Harry Morgan, as a classifiable kind of human being. In her treatment of types, she shows how Hemingway draws thematic parallels between seemingly disparate racial types, complicating the dualism of "to have" and "have not" that appears in the title.

Author Quotes:
He had written in September 1936: “Me I like life very much. So much it will be a big disgust when have to shoot myself. Maybe pretty soon I guess although will arrange to be shot in order not have bad effect on kids.” Ernest Hemingway
