Award winning author and Book Club Extraordinaire member,  Carol Ferring Shepley introduces her new book Lori's Lessons: What Parkinson Teaches About Life and Love.

About the book

For fifteen years, Lori Patin fought relentlessly against her Parkinson’s Disease, but in the summer of 2011 it looked as if Parkinson’s had won.  She lay in a coma and her husband, Bob, thought the best he could hope for was to bring her home with a nurse.  Today she doesn’t even have tremors.  Her doctor, Michael Rezak, a nationally recognized Parkinson’s specialist, says he has seen nothing like it and knows of no similar remission in the literature.

Lori’s Lessons does not promise you the kind of miracle that comes from on high, but it does offer a way to achieve the miracles you create yourself with hard work and a good attitude.  Lori attacks her implacable foe all day every day.  She fights against it with diet, exercise, harp lessons, deep tissue massage, acupuncture, Feldenkrais® and, most of all, a good attitude.  Through the years, she has taken many pharmaceuticals, but the two strongest drugs in her regimen are: hope and faith.

Most of all Lori’s Lessons is a love story.  Bob is Lori’s primary caregiver and best friend.  He takes Tai Chi and ballroom dancing with her and always knows where she is even when he doesn’t appear to be looking.  Every morning he brings her breakfast in bed and then washes and blow-dries her hair.  So this is the story of the love between two people who accept each other in all humility and honesty and completely support each other to the last measure of devotion.
